So my Biolite camp stove arrived yesterday. After some experimentation I can say that bark definitely not a good idea unless you like smoke. Pinecones are a close second on the list of what not to use. Twigs, branches, kindling worked the best. Fire took about 30 seconds to get going before I could start cooking. I boiled a pot of water in about 3 minutes. So next, tried scrambled eggs. Easy to use, just turned down the fan to low - nice even heat.
could you give me a review on the Biolite for charging a smart phone say a iphone 4s? time to charge? also how much dirt and soot on the bottom of the unit when done cooking. Greatly appreciate it. Great blog love the Black Mt scout camp photos. Giving you shout out from Troop 394.
ReplyDeleteI've not had any success with charging my phone - I have a galaxy s3. Biolite does have a list of compatible devices on their web site - unfortunately mine is not one of them. I didn't really purchase it for that. It was a novelty at first, but now I really like it. I did purchase their recent adaptor for barbequing - wouldn't buy that. It is too heavy and messy - just novelty. The pitcher that goes with it - well jury is still out on that one. I need to try it some more.
ReplyDeleteThere is very little ash after use - I've cooked on it for over 30 minutes, back to back, and not much. It does get sooty - only natural, but it runs at such a high temperature, most of that can be shaken off. The only time it really smokes is if you use wood with a lot of bark - small branches or pine cones don't work well. You do want to have all your wood collected ahead of time - takes a bit more preplanning, but otherwise weighs the same as my whisper-lite + white gas.
